A Swedish gentleman at court

The gentleman is wearing king Gustaf III's national suit in its gala version. Sewn in silk taffeta after original pattern. Not sewn by me, alas.

In the 1770's Gustaf III designed and drove through, that everyone at court had to wear the national clothes. Gentry was encouraged to do so too. He was very influenced by historical fashion and also wanted clothes that was comfortable. Men's wore waistcoat, jacket, a sash, breeches and a short mantle. Light blue with white decorations for festive occasions, black with red for courtly daywear. A number of other colour combinations could be worn as well and the men's costume became quite popular- you were always correctly attired if you wore it.

What women thought about their version, was a complete other matter...
