18th century stays

Description

Front- and backlaced stays from Norah Waugh's "Corsets and Crinolines."

Red linen, edged with linen ribbon (not bia-cut- and it was a trial to sew.). Stiffened with plastic whalebones and hemp-cord. In retrospect I will say that the hemp-cording worked wonderfully in the back, but that I should probably use more whalebones in the front. The stomacher have a wood busk inserted in the middle.

Hi. I too have made a red travelling corset with white trim. The idea is that when you are bouncing up and down on a horse or in a carriage you take out the stomacher part so that you do not bruise your stomach. When you get to your venue you slip it back in to get the correct silhouette and uplift. Very practical.

I wear mine with an 18th century outfit where every layer is scarlet. such fun.
